UPDATE 6.55pm: The Army EOD team have examined the item and confirmed it does not pose a danger. It has been removed and the neighbours have been allowed back in their homes.
Police in York have put a 50-metre safety cordon in place after builders unearthed a metal item which could have been there since the Second World War.
Officers were alerted to the house undergoing renovations on Howe Hill Road, in the Holgate area of the city, at 4.40pm today (Wednesday 14 September 2022).
Nearby properties and allotments have been evacuated as a precaution awaiting the arrival of the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
We’ll keep you updated on the situation and confirm when the matter has been dealt with.
