Upon completion of the 3 year probationary period, constables are given the opportunity to develop their career to become a detective.
One of the most challenging and rewarding jobs in policing is that of a detective. The role of a detective involves:
investigating serious, complex and volume crime offences
using both traditional methods and new technology to identify suspects and secure evidence
delivering justice for vulnerable victims
locking up the most dangerous criminals
All detectives must first and foremost be good police officers. North Yorkshire Police do not currently run a ‘direct entry’ detective programme, however we do have a number of initiatives designed to identify potential future detectives from an early stage and support those officers through their initial 3-year training programme to a potential ‘streamlined’ entry onto our Trainee Detective Constable Pathway.
For officers who demonstrate outstanding potential this could take place soon after completing their student officer portfolio at week 90, others may take longer; becoming an expert investigator is something which requires commitment and professionalism and is not to be rushed!
There are a number of detective roles within North Yorkshire Police available for officers to develop both laterally and towards promotion; the entry point for all trainee detectives is our Investigation Hubs and/or CID teams.
Types of detective work
Detectives in North Yorkshire Police work in a number of different teams including Investigation Hubs, CID teams, Organised Crime Unit, Economic Crime Unit, Online Abuse Team, Cyber Crime Unit, Safeguarding and Major Investigation Team.
They deal with a wide range of investigations from volume crime (burglary, robbery and violence), to serious and complex crime such as serious sexual offences, organised crime and homicide.
Safeguarding and partnership working underpins all of our investigations as we work to support and protect some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.
As a police officer joining North Yorkshire Police you will complete a 3-month crime attachment in your training period where you will work alongside experienced investigators and detectives initially in the Investigation Hubs and CID teams. Here you will actively engage in live investigations and develop your investigative skills.
NYP Detective Academy
Student officers aspiring to become detectives on joining North Yorkshire Police can register with the NYP Detective Academy. This initiative, run by our operational detectives, is designed to identify and develop prospective detectives from an early stage. By allocating a mentor DC, officers will be supported through their initial training to potential ‘streamlined’ entry as a trainee detective.
The Detective Academy will then provide an additional 6-month attachment to local investigation teams to develop you further towards this goal. For officers who demonstrate outstanding potential this could take place within your probationary period ie before week 90. Becoming an expert investigator is something which requires commitment and professionalism so individual development will be tailored to each officer’s needs.
Your training as a trainee detective will include sitting the National Investigators’ Exam and completion of the Initial Crime Investigation Development Program, following which you will complete your detective portfolio and qualify as a nationally-accredited PIP2 detective. After qualifying as a detective you will be able to progress to other specialisms depending on your skillset and aspirations.
Being a Detective is one of the most challenging and rewarding roles in North Yorkshire Police.
